Preparing You for Tomorrows Jobs Today

Over the past four years, Workforce 2000 has focused on an industry, which is having the greatest impact on our economy, telecommunications technology. During this period, Workforce 2000 has implemented six (6) telecommunication education initiatives and served as coordinator for City Council Public Hearings on "The Impact of Telecommunications on the City of Philadelphia." Through these activities, working relationships have been established with industry leaders and related public and private agencies: AT&T, Bell Atlantic-PA, Eastern TeleLogic, RMS Technologies, LibertyNet, WHYY, Comcast Corporation, Greater Media Cablevision, School District of Philadelphia, Community College of Philadelphia, Temple University, Graduate Hospital, Free Library of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission among others in the industry.

BACKGROUND INFO

The Workforce 2000 Advisory Council was established as a result of the 1989 Workforce 2000 Symposium, "Philadelphia Prepares for the Future", convened by Councilwoman Marian B. Tasco, former Chair of the City Council Committee on Commerce and Economic Development and the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition. Directed by Carole I. Smith, President, The Workforce 2000 Initiative, the Workforce 2000 Advisory Council functions as a division within the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition and serves as an advocate for human resource development to meet Philadelphia's current and future workforce needs.

The Workforce 2000 Advisory Council has inaugurated an information exchange and data analysis approach to stimulate the design, implementation and effectiveness of programs directed toward alleviating employment related problems for the fastest growing segment of the workforce, minorities and women. Critical to this approach is the involvement of private and public leaders and the community. We believe more can be done to prepare the business, education and training communities, and our society to cope with our changing economy.
